Two weeks ago, Coach Mark Dantonio defended his program’s pride against an arrogant player who couldnt keep his mouth shut. Two weeks later, the results are in
MSU 2-0
UM 0-2
I know many have said that Dantonio acted like a fool, bickering with a young kid. I know many have said that his words rung hollow.
But you know what?
His players responded. They saw that their coach still had a lot of fight in them.
And they fought too. Two games, one on the road where they never win. One at home against a team they never beat.
MSU teams have collapsed other years after a loss to UM. Not this time.
This time it was UM and Gary Coleman who couldnt win a game in November.
If not for Ron Zook and Illinoi$, Dantonio would win coach of the year in the BigTen.
Either way, you have to be happy with the results this season as a MSU fan. And hopefully they get rewarded with a bowl in a warmer climate.

Isaac, I was right there with you when Dantonio reacted to Arnold Drummond’s comments. I still agree that it’s out of character to get into pissing matches with players. However, his timing was spot on. All Spartan faithful had officially given up on this team, including myself, after the Michigan letdown. Dantonio shifted the entire focus onto himself by defending his players and program. They obviously responded! The jury may still be out, buy I believe in Dantonio.

Hey, I’m a big Mark Dantonio fan. I think he has things moving in the right direction and could be the type to stick around for a long time so we could hopefully finally have another “institutional” coach (and a good one, you’d have to go back to D.D. to find one of those.) But, I think it’s a pretty tough argument to make to say that the coach of a 3-5 team had the best year in the conference, especially when a much easier argument could be made that at least three (maybe all 5) of the losses were attributable to questionable coaching.
With that said, and notwithstanding the various and obvious wrinkles that still need to be ironed out, I like what I see, it’s very good he got ‘em to a bowl game in his first season, and I expect things to keep getting better.
Also, that game was awesome.

I thought the BigTen considered out of conferences victories as well when voting for coach of the year?
No?

I can agree that the coach of a 3-5 conference record should not win Coach of the Year. I like everything this guy stands for (except his exchange with that one running back from scUM), but I need to see more on game days.
At the moment, I will compare him to Jim Leyland. Both seem to top notch motivators and know how to get the majority of their players playing well and on the same page. Both are very classy and honest people and aren’t afraid to set the record straight. But, I seem to question too many “baseball decisions” and “football decisions” that both are responsible for. Yes, I know I have a pretty critical nature, but I also consider myself pretty knowledgeable.
In a couple games this season (see Michigan and Iowa), Dantonio and his staff coached “not to lose” in the fourth quarter. The fake punt on Saturday was a 180 degree switch from that. What a freakin’ gutsy call. It was a call that you’re ridiculed if it doesn’t work, but you’re praised when it does. Also, give Dantonio credit for leaving Caulcrick in the game in the 4th quarter. It’s something that went unnoticed by most, but it’s also something he hasn’t done in the past. The season was on the line this past Saturday and, with the help of a BIG TRUCK BIG TRUCK, Dantonio led the guys to the biggest win in the last six years (or so).
Coach of the Year? Not quite. Right coach for the job? You’re darn right.

They won less than 50% of their conference games, in close situations and on judgment calls. I want him to win it, this just isn’t the year. I honestly think you could make as good, if not better, case for every head coach whose team finished ahead of MSU in the Big Ten. Even Grandma Carr. I hate him, but he straightened them out and won big games (see MSU). Iowa sucked, but they had what, 13 active players on their team? They went 4-4 in conference play. OSU only lost 1 game for Pete’s sake. The only teams that finished higher than MSU and still “under performed” in my opinion were Wisconsin and Penn State, but I think that was by virtue of being overrated and being victims of their early success. They were still good teams; one may have outcoached MSU for the win; the other had them on the ropes.

but arent preseaon predictions also factored in with who wins coach of the year?
Dantonio was not expected to do much, at best 6-6, 7-5 and he met or exceeeded those expectations…
again, not saying he should win but I think he did a better job than a majority of the conference

I think Bill Lynch (from Indiana) should win it. The guy took over as HC on the heels of the actual HC’s death. Considering it’s Indiana, I think he did a heck of a job getting them to a bowl game.
If not Bill Lynch, Tressel would get my vote.

Indiana did a good job, ill give them credit, they beat Purdue at home and won at Iowa….however, they did not have to play Ohio State or Michigan this year and their other 5 wins are
1AA Indiana St
WMU
Akron
Ball St.
Minn

Andy — despite the comments posted here don’t really concern what I’m about to say, you’ve compelled me to write the following:
You can’t seriously think that there’s a correlation between Dantonio’s comment and Michigan’s losses!!!
Michigan hasn’t thought twice about State since we kicked your ass.
Our losses were due to 1)the freshmen quarterback, 2) injured Hart & Henne, 3) playing the number one ranked team in the big ten.
The only time Dantonio’s comments will be relevant to the Wolverines is if Michigan State ever manages a win against them…

why such anger?
how did Dantonio put it? “Pride comes before the fall”
I would venture to say State wins the majority of the next 10 games versus U of M.
Profound statement of the year!

your optimism is cute, “much cooler MSU fan” — but that’s all it is.
Even with Michigan’s embarrassing loss to appalachian state, the Wolverines came back to have a better record than your mighty Spartans.
What’s it going to take for the Spartans to win the next 10 games against us?

10 reasons why MSU is better than UofM (no particular order)
1. We have a mascot.
2. We are a top 3 basketball program
3. We have good looking girls.
4. We are smarter (i.e.- more road scholars, etc)
5. We are not arrogant. (except when it comes to our good looking girls.)
6. We don’t lose to Appalachian State
7. We have good looking girls.
8. We don’t act like our biggest rivalry (MSU) is really no rivalry at all and cling to the fact that losses to OSU hurt worse than losses to Michigan State. Keep telling yourselves that. It’s called denial.
9. We have good looking girls
10. We are much cooler. (or as you put it…cute)

Where’d that one running back with the big mouth go after the loss to Ohio State? Oh yeah, he snuck out the back door and took a little-used stairwell out of Crisler Arena to avoid the media; leaving his teammates there to answer questions.
At least he’s consistent. He wins without class and loses without class.

in a vaccuum, no
but think about it from this perspective…
It was a terrible loss for State against UM and most before the season said they would probably lose at Purdue and against PSU
so considering the circumstances, going 2-0 was very unexpected and it made their season…they dont win those two games, they arent going to a bowl
UM was somebody to be competitive year round….they were on a high after beating State in East Lansing…and yet, when the season really mattered in the last two games and the BigTen was on the line, they crapped the bed…
State dealt with the pressure better than UM did

I’m a shit.
I didn’t walk out the back door of the lockerroom, Chad Henne put me in his pocket and he walked out.
Play in pain? Who? Me?
Why did I suck against Ohio State? I don’t show up in big games. I never have. I gained 100 yards against Michigan State, but 25 came when Mallet fumbled and I bit Jonal Saint-Dic’s ankle, grabbed the ball, snuck up Jake Long’s butt and he ran for 25 yards.
And, finally, Javon Ringer could have done what I did, if he had my line.

Even if he was making that comparison, I think it is more than fair. Prior to this year, MSU had not won AT Purdue since 1993 (like it or not, that makes it a big win). The next week, State beats Penn State – the biggest win UofM had all season. Compare that to UofM losing to an overrated Wisconsin team that State had on the ropes back when the Badgers were still classified a top 5 team, and then laid an egg at home against an OSU team that State put up a much better showing against IN THE HORSESHOE – oh, you disagree? Tell that to your three points on Saturday [fart].
I hope you do get Les Miles to replace Grandma Carr. That way your football program can be as crooked as your basketball program in the mid90s- oh, wait, you didn’t have a basketball program in the mid90s. Check the records books and the banisters.
Ya’ piss yellow & blue weiners.

Also, I’m not surehow the Heisman voting works, but I can’t wait to see the at-best number 4 back in the Big Ten win the Heisman. Good call coming back. Sure, you won’t win the Heisman, won’t go to the NFL, will go down in the history of college football as a punchline, it has been confirmed for everyone in America you are both an A-hole and a poo-say, and you look like Gary Coleman, BUT, the Outback Bowl will make it all worth it [fart].

In regards to Michigan having a better record than MSU, not so fast my friend. If MSU wins and U of M loses, their records are identical. Why doesn’t someone ask Mike Hart if his big brother is Ohio State? I agree with Tim, despite the not so nice weather, the game was great to go to.
