You know what would REALLY help PSU?If JoePa started coaching again! I know he's old, and he probably doesn't do much anymore due to his age. However, the assistant coaches are WRECKING the team. If you want an example of their ineptitude, watch this year's games against Indiana and Ohio State. Tom Bradley ran a Tampa 2 defense the entire game against Indiana, giving up completion after completion and allowing PSU's secondary no chance to make big plays. PSU squeaked out a win in that one, so apparently Bradley figured the defensive strategy that had worked so badly against IU would be fine to use against OSU. I'd say 75% of OSU's completions were to the soft spot between the LBs and the safeties. I could see the defense failing right before my eyes (I was at the game) and it was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. Bradley said himself that the formation he was using was meant to limit yardage and prevent big plays by the other team. However, all it did was prevent big plays by PSU; when you limit OSU to 7 yards per completion but never break up a pass, you're going to lose. Combine this with Galen Hall's trite and antiquated playcalling, and you've got yourself a blowout. And who knows what JayPa is doing down there?Keep JoePa for whatever reason you're keeping him, PSU, but PLEASE replace the rest of the staff. 4-loss seasons aren't acceptable to me, considering the weakness of Michigan and MSU this year.

You're opinion is that he is washed up, has nothing left to offer, and is actually hurting the program he built. You are seen as a "hater" because you are "hating." As for leadership: JoePa offers institutional leadership I can only hope Dantonio (or whoever replaces him, should that day come) will have, but it will take 10-15 years to establish. Anyone that goes to Penn State knows what they are in for and knows what will be expected of them. Granted, they have their blemishes, but they are neither alone in that, nor the most eggregious (although, I fully expected a HUGE sh*t-storm a couple years ago when they had the huge recruiting class on the heels of their worst seasons). As for the "delegator" versus "head coach" issue: I think it's a non-issue. People have said he coaches at practice, stays on top of his assistants (they what she said, kind of), and gets in the ears of his play callers. I'm not sure what more you want your head coach to do. Wear a headset? Shoot, I wore a headset on the sidelines, does that make me a better head than JoePa? (I might be - gimme a chance).

I would just like to say that I have several friends on the Penn State football team and JoePa does in fact still coach. He gets in the faces of players, yells at them, and corrects their mistakes. He does his coaching during practice. I will say, though, that he has probably the worst set of assistant coaches i have ever seen.. JayPa is horrible and is lucky he can even tie his own shoes.. McQueary is a red-headed stepchild who should've been beaten a long time ago

I'd like to point out that people were football coaches before headsets existed. JoePa isn't the only Div-1A head coach who doesn't wear a headset during the game.

So yeah, he's not calling the plays and he's not in every single decision and maybe he doesn't pre-game as much as some people think, but who really cares? You should care as a PSU fan. You should demand that PSU put its best possible coaching staff together to get the best possible results for the football team. If Paterno is delegating most of his responsibilities, then is he really the "Head Coach" or is he just a facilitator. If he is a facilitator, I think it effects the program as a whole. 1-2 years you can get away with somebody doing that but players need to see leadership from the top. Is it a wonder that PSU has had legal problems with their players this year? Not to say that it is directly attributed to JoePA but I think its a fair question to ask if these same kind of problems happens with a coach who is more visible to the players. As far as the donations is concerned. JoePA stands above all other coaches with regards to academic donations. I read that he has given 4 million dollars of his own money and helped with the fundraiser for the new library(which was why they renamed it)He is a legend and he should go out as one. I just happen to think he is hanging on too long.
