To the suprise of absolutely no one, Mike Martz has been fired as Offensive Coordinator of the Lions.
Though Martz had his foibles, its hard to pin the lions 1-7 ending on him. In fact, if anything, ownership and management knew Martz would butt heads with Head Coach Rod Marinelli before they even hired him.
Marinelli wanted to dominate the line of scrimmage by running the ball and Martz was known to have a pass happy playbook.
It was a recipe for disaster.
Shame on Lions management yet again for instilling a plan that barely survived two seasons.
At the very least now, Mike Martz will be one of those few Lions coaches who atually get a job somewhere else.
In the meantime, Wayne Fontes and Steve Mariucci still wait by their phones; desperate for that phone call.

I think Martz was hired because he was able to run a (once) successful offense with complete autonomy.
Since Rod Verysmelly’s NFL coaching experience consisted of ONLY being a d-line coach/assistant head coach (which I consider to only be a title), the Lions/Verysmelly figured they would need someone who could run an offense on their own. Thus, Martz was their guy.
Because Ford is not going to fire Millen and Millen is going to give Verysmelly more time, Martz was the obvious scapegoat.

If there is one thing that Mr. Millen is good at, it is putting the blame on somebody else in the organization so that he will keep his job another year! That bastard!!
