A few months ago, we had it good in Detroit. Our beloved Pistons were catching the Celtics after they had laid an egg the first two rounds of the playoffs and the Wings were well on their way to another Stanley Cup.
And all the hype around the Tigers seemed legitimate. Many around here were buying their playoff tickets months in advance.
And God bless the Wings for holding up their end of the bargain and brining home Lord Stanley
But the Pistons decided the playoffs weren’t important enough to play “hard” and took some time off.
And the Tigers, well, they have collectively turned in one of the most disappointing seasons in the history of Detroit Professional Sports.
I would talk about the Lions here but I think everyone in the sporting world knows about the colossal failure they are. If they won 6 games this year, there may be a ticker tape parade down Woodward.
So who’s to blame for this big lull in Detroit Sports? Who are the biggest culprits in the demise of sports in our beloved town…..
5. Joe Dumars’ Wife

For all I know, Joe Dumars wife might be the greatest lady in the world. But lately, I think we can all assume she’s not pulling her weight. Joe has not fared so well since the Championship Year of ‘04 and his inability to pull the right strings with coaching decisions and personnel comes right back to her.
Mrs. Dumars, start doing your job or we’re going to replace you.
4. Detroit Tigers Pitching Staff and Chuck Hernandez

No lead is safe with this pitching staff. A few days ago newly acquired Kyle Farnsworth dropped a deuce on the mound and blew a 2 run lead by giving up 2 homeruns. Top that off with the venerable Fernando Rodney doing his best Rick Ankiel impression and its a microchosm of the season. Fat Chuck Hernandez is THE biggest problem. Oddly, guys who have not been under his tutelage very long, seem to fair the best. Galaraga and Jair Jurrjens are two that stick right out.
3. Jim Leyland’s cigarettes

Instead of smoking a carton a day, Leyland would have been better served taking his frustration on his players. He didn’t get them ready during Spring Training and they ended up sleepwalking through the first two weeks of the season. Ultimately, that is what will cost them in the end. Had Leyland traded in his fifth Marlboro pack for a stern talking to with Chuck Hernandez, a lot of this could have been avoided.
2. Matt Millen

No list of Detroit pro sports demise is complete without the ultimate buffoon
1. Kwame Kilpatrick’s Thug Life

A lot of people would be more accepting of our current situation if they felt the city was going in the right direction. But with Kwame at the helm, there is a weekly story of him banging broads, punching police officers, and generally running the city into the ground. He tried to redeem himself at the Wings victory parade but was booed mercifully off the stage. The man is as fraudulent as the 2008 Detroit Tigers and is the #1 culprit for the demise of sports in our city.
