Is it me or does it look like MSU and Michigan have swapped places? Michigan looks like a typical John L. Smith disorganized team. Undisciplined, stupid turnovers, guys running in the wrong direction, poor special teams, etc…
On the other hand, MSU plays solid football. There is really no other way to describe it. They rarely make big mistakes, they tackle well, their penalties are down, they have a solid kicker. These are the types of things we used to see in Ann Arbor.
How is it that the tide has changed so quickly?
Look no farther than the personality of the two coaches.
Dantonio was honest with his players. Told them exactly what was expected of them. But more importantly, he gave them confidence that when the time came, they would make a play.
Its called putting your players in the best position to win games.
One of the better plays of the MSU-Northwestern game was the “onside kick” fair catch call. It was such a heads-up play, that I can say without a shadow of a doubt, that most Spartan fans were shocked.
It was the type of play that would have never happened under past regimes.
Conversely, look at Rich Rodqiguez. He weaseled his way out of West Virginia and made himself look like a fool. Whether you agree with me or not on the choice of words, you have to agree that it made UM look bad.
Then, he was too stubborn to look at his players and say, “Maybe running a spread with this team isn’t such a great idea”.
No, it was his system or no system.
It’s probably one of the biggest problems in the coaching world today. My system is the best system no matter the personnel I have. Its like a mantra they keep repeating to themselves
It did Steve Mariucci in and its about to do Rod Marinelli in.
Would Michigan have had more success running a basic offense with some spread mixed in. Personally, I have no doubt in my mind. The players look like they are so busy thinking abpout the plays that they forget the small things like, “holding onto the ball”.
And it trickles down, all the way to a guy like the kicker.
I’m not saying that there is a permanent shift in the state. Even State fans will agree that Michigan is still the historically better program. But there have been times in the past where each team has gone through a lull.
Dare I say Michigan is in one now?

Lions got hosed. No two ways about it. Two of the worst calls in the NFL this season occurred during this game.
As Calvin Johnson went over the middle to catch a pass, he was hit helmet to helmet. He juggled the ball but still had it in his possession on the ground. As Johnson laid there on the turf, a Viking came by and ripped it from his arms.
The replays were clear. Johnson was on the ground with possession of the ball.
And the refs ruled it a fumble.
Fast forward to the Vikings game winning field goal. On 2nd and 20, the Vikings threw a prayer down the sidelines.
There was no grabbing, no jostling whatsoever. The Lions defensive back may have nudged the receiver. Although, I’m not even sure I would call it a nudge.
The flag came out. A 40+ yard pass interference call putting the Vikings in field goal range.
The Lions are not a good team but sometimes, you need a break or two.
The refs certainly didn’t give them one here.

God love ‘em, they are playing better than their opponents, to date, but I still don’t think MSU is a very good football team. I am not taking the standard WOI position of “everything sucks.” I’m just saying, they have benefitted from they schedule they have played so far, and potentially that they will play all year. True, there have been some big plays. No one can take anything away from Ringer. The 4th qtr 4th down stop against Iowa was big. But they don’t put teams away, they don’t adjust as quickly as they need to and they have trouble scoring points at very serious times. TDs, not FGs.
Hey, I’m enjoying it. I want to see ‘em go 11-1. I wouldn’t bee the least bit suprised if they end up 10-2 and going to the Rose Bowl. BUT, I am cautious waving it in people’s faces. The team/program has a long way to go’ this year has been a SIGNIFICANT stride in the right direction, but they haven’t arrived . . . yet . . .

In Dick Rod’s defense, Michigan knew what they were getting into when they hired him. You don’t hire Bill Walsh or Mike Martz and expect your team to be a defensive stalwart. All college coaches are system coaches.
Dantonio ran the same system at Cincinnati as he does here. Dick Rod ran the same system at West Vagina as he does here. Urban Meyer is running the same system at Florida as he ran at Utah. Pete Carroll brought a system to USC. Bob Stoops has been running the same system at Oklahoma for the last decade. Mike Leach, at Texas Tech brought the same system from Oklahoma. Need I go on?
College coaches aren’t expected to adapt to incumbent players. They’re supposed to bring in their own players that fit “their” system. Do Michigan players look confused, lost, etc? Yes, but it isn’t because they don’t “fit the system”. More than likely, it’s because they don’t know the system.

Tim, you are definitely correct about Dickrod’s system. However, losing to a second rate MAC team is unacceptable. Rod gets a grace period on the season, he deserves one. However, he gets no such pass when it comes to this loss.

I agree Dick-Rod deserves heat for this loss, but not for bringing his system with him. I disagree with criticising him for taking a “his system or no system” approach; I think most (all) head coaches are that way; and I think that’s what Tim was saying. Yes, WOI, that may be your point, too, but I don’t think the problem is with the coach running his system, or not fitting into the program; I think it’s more the program not finding the right coach — or in this case, cooch. Michigay knew what they were getting when they bought this guy – if his system isn’t what they wanted, or thought best suited there program, culture, whatever, they should have got someone else. This is his system, this is what works (supposedly) for him, and this is what he’s going to run. Yes, Bush, he needs to find a way to beat Toledo – there’s no real excuse for him not to – however I don’t blame it on him not adapting to Michigay’s current players. I blame it on him being a Dick, literally and figuratively, and Michigay being a terrible team.

Is Tony Kornheiser reading WOI? Last night, I was watching yesterday’s PTI. As they were going to commercial, they teased with what stories they were going to talk about after the break. Kornheiser seque’s to the Lion’s by saying: “Did the Lions get hosed?” Wilbon made a big deal out of it, saying “‘Hosed’? ‘Hosed?”
Look at WOI’s weekend recap. “The Lions got hosed.”
You be the judge.
