Many cops got into the business of, um, coppery for the thrill of the action. So you could imagine their disappointment when the job isn’t as exciting as TV made it out to be.
From Friday though Thursday, 10 people were murdered. Most are unsolved. Most didn’t have any particular rhyme or reason: Man shot in an apparent robbery. Man shot to death in argument with two men. Man shot in possible drug house. Man shot in apartment complex parking lot. Man tries to intervene in a disturbance, gets beaten and shot in Dairy Queen parking lot.
The list goes on: Man fatally shot in suspected drug house. Two convicted felons found bound and shot in a car in suspected drug-related slaying. Man fatally shot in strip club parking lot. Man shot in apartment parking lot.
All were male. Six victims were black. Three were Latino. One was white.
“They’re random,” said Lt. Craig Miller, commander of the homicide unit. “We just don’t ever get those really cool CSI-type murders…. It’s just somebody goes to a dope house and gets murdered. It’s someone has been drinking, gets in a fight and gets murdered.”

The job is seldom like reality. I spent several years in the Army. We trained constantly for war with Soviet Union. The number of stupid things that went haywire is mind blowing. The Gulf war in 1991 went a little strange too. The refueling vehicles vehicles for the M-1 Tanks Kept out pacing them and 5th Corps had Iraqi Soldiers surrendering to Fuel Trucks. There was a CNN Camera that had a whole Company of Soldiers surrender to them. Desert Storm had comical moments, tragedies and miracles. Children and innocent civilians found safe in bombed buildings. Humor could be found in the strangest places. No never expect TV or Movie type happenings. Chance and Murphy’s Law are always there to muddy the waters.
