I hate the Yankees, but in addition to what everyone else mentioned, Jeter also has the most hits in the history of Yankee Stadium. He deserves to be mentioned along with the greatest Yanks, but I think Joe D., Ruth, and Gehrig are more impressive in historical context.

take a listen to what even his opponents around the League say about Mr Jeter; that should dispel any doubts about how good he is. he's no Berra (who has 10 rings), but eventually he should end up on the list of top-10 Yankee greats.

I laugh when I hear someone say that Jeter is overated. I'm not smart enough to know where he ranks. What I do know is that in my mind he's the best intangible player I have ever seen. He has uncanny baseball insticts. He's always in the right place and seemingly always makes the right play and is just amazingly good in pressure situations. He's also a tremendous baserunner. He has more hits then anyone that has played the shorstop position in the HISTORY of the game! Despite what you say, he's won I believe 3 or 4 gold gloves. I watch quite a few yankee games and I see a guy that makes every play has a gun for an arm and no fear of going hard into the stands. Especially when the moment calls for it. I've see him make some absolutely amazing plays from deep in the hole with that patented Jeter jump throw. Some other things to take into account, like what he has done playing for the New York Yankees in the biggest pressure cooker in the country. The fact the guy runs hard all the time and NEVER dogs it...EVER. The fact that he carries himself as a professional and never puts himself in bad situations off the field and is a role model for kids and Oh, he's steroid free. Put that all together with his stats and rings. Where does all that rank the yankee captain? Like I said I'm not smart enough to know? What I do know is the guy could never be overated from where I sit? Anyone that thinks that he is, is either not a fan of the yankees or sorry, A Complete Idiot!

I don't think the question (which has been all over sports talk, etc.) is fair to Jeter. He has the misforunte of playing for a team that has had some of the greatest players (period) of all time; particularly Ruth. So, to be the "greatest yankee", he'd have to be the greatest player in the history of the game. That's a tall order that eclipses his accomplishment last night, accomplishments thus far, and the milestones/records he will reach in the coming years. I think he may be one of, if not the, greatest TEAM player (be it, face of a franchise, commitment to a franchise, conmmitment to any given team any given season, role player, leader, etc.) of all time, all sports.
