Well since there are only a few girls on here, and they're the only one's who know what this blogger is talking about, I'd have to disagree with the "men" here and their shalllow comments. Here's the thing, she's only saying that real life is a little more complicated than the dramatic happy endings that are provided in Romantic Comedies.

I am particularly offended by the portrayal of women in Romantic Comedies. They make us look like we depend on men. In reality, we depend on jobs, friends, and sometimes inhalers.

And guys, you're not allowed to say it's shallow for women to make a decision based on money. Most men make decisions based on looks...ALL THE TIME. Personality is a little factor. So how about we say money is our factor? And personality isn't an issue.

What I find amusing is that this is the list of things that happen in a rom com that women wouldnt want in real life but I know of women who have gone through all but one of those experiences. The author is very bitter, angry and self loathing. The fact is that although these gestures do not happen all the time, they happen often enough to be recognized and put in a movie.

First off, I own a small used bookstore. yes, i am a guy, i am straight and i have a life. The point of fiction is to be just that, Fiction! It is to be a way for us to believe in happy ever after, and happy endings. The books that sell best are books with a romantic angle of some sort, and that end happily. I know i don't want to read a book where good doesn't triumph. Yes i read romances, as well as most other genres. The point isn't "Is this book/movie real?" The point is, "Did I laugh? Did i escape for a few minutes into a place where the worries of the real world were not mine?" Also I object to the use of "The Little Mermaid in this article. It is a children's Fairy Tale! Thsu meaning it is a work of pure imagination. No guy I know watches that movie and think, "Oh, so that is how to pick up girls!" Doesn't happen. Yes i know that there are peop[le out there (liek this repoter) who do not realize that this is fiction nad that fiction doesn't have to follow the rules of the real world. I pity them for the fact that they will never get the enjoyment the rest of us do from reading, or viewing, some good fiction, and being able to tell a good story.

His point would be valid, except there is a sequel to The Notebook. It is called The Wedding. And Noah Calhoun wasn't poor, he had a pretty fantastic house, was a hard worker, he just didn't have daddy's money like the other guy did. Noah doesn't die at the end of The Notebook, he lives on through the sequel, it is about his kids. Maybe the columnist should pick up a book every once in a while. Or at least have someone proofread his stuff that does.

I think the author was saying that a woman who gave up wealth for life with someone who was very poor might have some regrets due to the realization that love doesn't necessarily put food on the table. I didn't read it as don't fall in love with someone who is poor, but just perhaps think about consequences and what you are giving up for someone (I think this point also links with the Jerry McGuire ex and we could say that women shouldn't depend on their romantic partners to support them anyway).

This article should be named "1 columnist you don't want in real life". The overall lesson was: go for the rich pushovers who don't love you so you can have your life without anything tying you down, least of all kids.

I never thought I'd be siding with rom com wish fulfillment but I guess the opposite end of the spectrum is just as ugly.

I personally would love to see the afterlife sequel to The Notebook...it was attempted once with Robin Williams in What Dreams May Come but I think now is the time for it. People love ghosts I mean look at Paranormal State and Ghost Hunters for more evidence. It would be titled The Eulogy and Act 1 would follow the old couple as they haunt current Charleston SC lovebirds and warn them about the dangers of falling in love with someone of a lower class.....oh and the old man would have to constantly remind the old woman where they were...dont think that ends in the afterlife (spolier alert!)

I agree with most everything on this list. Its true romantic comedies make me slightly ill because they make women look sad old and desperate for a man to challenge them into marriage "I hear you're going to be alone the rest of your life PROVE IT". Which is why I liked 500 days of summer because it was a movie about a roller coaster relationship that didnt end well. How much possible variation can be made on the formula girl meets guy, girl is hesitant towards guy, girl falls for guy, guy screws up, guy redeems himself at public event, girl becomes real life Jennifer Aniston. Now there are plenty of creative things you can do with the formula girl meets guy, girl falls for guy, girl catches guy with another girl or guy, guy finds weird stuff about girls medical history, girl beings to forward all of guys incoming texts to her phone, guy starts taking long business trips, girl goes abroad to spain and becomes lesbian....you get the picture. Oh and the thing about money is true J. Notice how you say when you were without money you lovED the person you WERE WITH...not currently with....glad to see you upgraded yourself...now top of that champaign and tell that pool boy he missed a spot!

I agree with certain aspects of this article due to the reasoning behind it, but I became a bit annoyed when I came to the section about how women in real life wouldn't fall in love with someone who is poor, or if they do, they will either be unhappy or regret their decision later. While money is important, it isn't everything. I don't need to be rich to be happy and I definately value love over money any day. I've been without it and still loved the person I was with. Another thing that bothers me is they stated why we as viewers wouldn't wonder why there aren't any sequels to these because they end up miserable. I don't ever assume that they end up miserable. I usually assume that they end up happy and that there really isn't anymore story to tell. Albeit that people who suddenly change class do usually end up miserable because the existence they had gone through previously in life is now completely diff., but this can happen just as easily to people who suddenly become rich than to those who suddenly become poor. As for the Notebook, the movie ends with them dieing... what kind of sequel could you have to that? Them in the afterlife?
