Egyptians take their soccer seriously

More from A. Isaac

In America, we’ve seen our fair share of fist fights during sporting events. The 2004 Palace Brawl might be the most memorable highlight of the last decade. As Pacers players fought with fans, they were harmlessly showered with beer, popcorn and cups.

I say harmlessly because a single plastic cup instigated the whole melee.

But dare I say, this incident in Cairo might be a little bit worse.

Four members of the Algerian football squad were injured when their team bus came under attack from stone throwers as it arrived in Cairo.

Algeria and Egypt, who are bitter football rivals, play a World Cup qualifying match in Cairo on Saturday.

Egyptian police have denied that anyone was injured in the incident, and the press accuses the Algerians of fabricating the whole thing.

But a Fifa official has said three players might have to miss the match.

A reporter for Algerian radio said that about 200 young people appeared just as the team arrived at a Cairo hotel and launched a hail of stones at the bus. Algerian radio has been reporting that three players were injured.

I’m no rock expert, but did you see that monstrosity the Algerian player showed to the tv cameras. It was like a 10 lb brick. I ask this most seriously….Do people bring their own stones to these events? I mean, do you come packed with a pillowcase of rocks and pass ‘em out to your friends or do you just hope to pick up some rubble during the altercation?

As for the Egyptians claiming this was a fabrication, allow me a second to compose myself.

…..

HAHA!

That might qualify as one of the all-time worst lies ever. Right up there with Wilt and his 20,000 women
