Anger management counselor arrested for pulling gun on cops

More from Chris Spags

File this one under “Signs You Should Not Be Professionally Helping People with Their Anger”: A Virginia man was arrested for allegedly pulling a gun on two men who happened to be undercover federal marshals. That’s typically cause enough for alarm. But what makes it worse? The man works as a domestic violence and anger management counselor.

A domestic violence and anger management counselor in Fairfax County is accused of pulling a gun on two men who turned out to be federal marshals.

Fifty-seven-year-old Jose L. Avila was arraigned in federal court in Alexandria on Thursday on a charge of assaulting a federal officer. Authorities say Avila pointed the gun at the marshals because he believed they were blocking his car.

Defense attorney William A. Odio says Avila pointed a cell phone at the men and didn’t know they were marshals.

Odio says Avila works at a nonprofit in Falls Church and gets frequent counseling referrals from judges and lawyers.

Well, I’d imagine those referrals would probably stop now. Also, I like how the lawyer uses the fact that the guy didn’t know that the two men were federal marshals as an excuse. Wow, really, your client wouldn’t have done a threatening thing if he knew the guys he was threatening were officers of the law, putting him in serious trouble and possibly jeopardizing his career over something so stupid? Stunning!

I would still hire this guy to do my anger management training though. Mostly because I’d want to do anger management training in an effort to more effectively utilize my anger. All my anger gets me is in arguments with my girlfriend. I’m ready to step up to the pros.
