’78: The Boston Red Sox, a Historic Game, and a Divided City
(List Price: $24.95)
Bill Reynolds brilliantly captures this volatile period and history-making baseball game in his new book: ’78: The Boston Red Sox, a Historic Game, and a Divided City. Reynolds sets a scene that is both optimistic and desperate, complex and elemental, as the story of a baseball season and climactic game seamlessly blends with the everyday horrors of a city on the brink of chaos.
In 1978, the Red Sox were a team just beginning to explore that parameters of the “Curse of the Bambino”; they hadn’t won a championship in 60 years. Red Sox fans needed a winning year to counteract a growing inferiority complex to their iconic rivals, the New York Yankees. Boston needed a winning year to collectively move itself out of a hole. And in this year the team was stacked with talent: Hall-of-Famers: Yastrzemski, Rice, Carlton Fisk and Dennis Eckersley; also Freddie Lynn, Dwight Evans, Rick Burleson, George Scott, Mike Torrez, Butch Hobson, Jerry Remy, Luis Tiant and “Spaceman” Bill Lee. It was a team that should have won baseball games and did. The team built a 14-game lead in their division that brought them to the precipice of one of the most monumental collapses in sports history. On October 4, 1978, the hated Yankees would come to Boston’s Fenway Park for a one-game showdown to determine who would move on in the playoffs. The rest is history.
