Marc Jacobs ad featuring Dakota Fanning banned in the UK
17 year-old actress Dakota Fanning appears in a new print ad for Marc Jacobs’ new perfume Oh, Lola! and some people, namely the United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority, think that it promotes the sexualization of a child.
“We considered that the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality,” the ASA said in its ruling.“Because of that, along with her appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualize a child. We therefore concluded that the ad was irresponsible and was likely to cause serious offense.”
Of course, Coty UK, the makers of the perfume see nothing wrong with the ad, saying they haven’t received any complaints and that the perfume bottle placed in between Fanning’s legs was “provoking, but not indecent.” As if they were going to come right out and say, “Whoops, you got us. Busted!”
While the ad may not meet most people’s definition of indecent, perhaps if Fanning, at age 17, didn’t look like she could still pass for a 14 year-old there wouldn’t have been any controversy. However, if she was 17 but say, looked like someone in her early to mid 30′s, my guess is that I wouldn’t even be talking about this today. Okay, I probably would. Busted.
