12 murdered, 50 wounded at ‘Dark Knight Rises’ screening
This is not the opening night that Gotham deserves. In grim news, a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises has been marred with tragedy when a mentally unbalanced man drove up to a theater in Aurora, Colorado and opened fire with an assault rifle on a packed theater full of moviegoers.
At least 12 people were killed and over 50 were wounded, reports CNN. The shooter has been identified as 24 year old James Holmes, an Aurora resident. Holmes stood up during the movie, turned to face the audience and threw canisters of tear gas, panicking the crowd. He then pulled out an assault rifle and began spraying bullets into the crowd. One of the victims was a 3 month old baby, which begs the question as to exactly why you would bring a three year old baby to a midnight screening of a Batman movie? Some audience members thought the smoke and gunshots were just effects to enhance the movie, but the majority of attendees began fleeing in terror as Holmes calmly walked the aisles picking off survivors.
The police captured Holmes without incident in the back parking lot of the theater. He informed them that he had placed a bomb in his apartment that would kill more innocent people, and when police investigated they discovered some sort of booby trap, the details of which are unclear.
We still have no idea what the motives were for this horrible crime. Our sympathies go out to all of the victims. Colorado residents should consider donating blood through Denver’s Bonfils Blood Center.
