Amazon.com is making a zombie movie?
It’s not enough for them to own reading, they want to own movies as well? So two years ago, Amazon launched its “Amazon Studios” initiative to create original film projects sourced from open submissions and audience feedback. The company received over 9000 film scripts (over 9000!), letting other users vote on them and they’re finally starting to put some into production.
With a working title of Zombies Vs. Gladiators, the high concept is pretty obvious. Amazon has tapped horror legend Clive Barker to direct the tale, which tells the tale of a shaman in the Roman coliseum who, with his dying breath, casts a spell to raise the dead warriors that have fallen their for the Empire’s entertainment. Deadline has more information, but so far the project is in the very early stages. Who knows whether it’ll turn out decent.
There has been a lot of pushback in the industry to the Amazon Studios concept, which allows the company to secure the rights to your project and strips you of creative control in the process. Aspiring screenwriters can find their movies in the hands of someone else. Is it worth it to see your movie get made if it isn’t the movie you wanted? Here’s the original project page – you make the call.
