America might get more ‘Idiocracy’
That’s good, because we’re sure not getting any smarter. Everything Mike Judge touches seems to turn to gold – from the early days of Beavis & Butt-Head on through cult classic Office Space and… well, the modern era of Beavis & Butt-Head. But the one project of his that didn’t get the respect it deserved was Idiocracy, his science fiction spoof about a future America so lobotomized by junk food and reality TV that civilization is crumbling under the weight of our collective stupidity. Fox didn’t know what to do with the movie and dumped it into just seven theaters without any promotion.
But now it might be coming back. Movieline is reporting that Terry Crews, who played President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho, a pro wrestling porn star, has been in talks with Fox and Mike Judge for a return to the Idiocracy universe.
“Me and Mike [Judge] are talking right now with Fox about some Camacho stuff. We literally met with Fox a week ago. It’s so cool.”
From what we’re hearing, the first new forays into the horrible future will come in the form of Web-only videos, but if they perform well it could open the door for a full-on movie sequel. In previous conversations with Crews, he mentioned that one of the ideas for the movie was a prequel that actually focused on President Camacho’s rise to power. Given the ridiculous elections we’ve seen since Idiocracy came out, it doesn’t seem quite so far-fetched anymore.
