7 of the best movie shootouts ever
Action movies come in many flavors, from action comedies all the way to action horrors. One of the most thrilling set pieces of any action flick is the gun fight. The following movies have outstanding scenes that either have a unique twist to them or are just pure rage-tastic shoot 'em up fests that we can't help but look forward to each time we press the "play" button. What are some of your favorite shootout sequences? -Jason Epstein

7 'Rambo 4' - The Jungle Scene
Goddamn, Sylvester Stallone can still rock shit! This was filmed when he was about 60 years old, and all I can say is that if I can still mow down scores of enemies with an enormous Humvee mounted machine gun and not short circuit my pacemaker when I'm that age, then I'll have completed an important life goal. Seriously though, this scene is an orgy of gratuitous violence and what it lacks in poignancy it more than makes up for in thrilling, raw brutality.

6 'Scarface' - The Grand Foyer Scene
Even if you haven't viewed this classic drug lord film, there's no way you haven't at least seen it immortalized on the wall of some frat guys room in poster form. This climactic battle is great not because of frenetic, well-choreographed progression toward the inevitable end, but because Al Pacino as an actor really nails and owns it as the power-crazed Tony Montana. Plus, it opens with the now famous line, "Say hello to my little friend!" Pop-culture popularized the phrase, and from that point forward, it was no longer just something people would say when introducing a dwarf.

5 'The Matrix' - The Lobby Scene
If you're viewing this extraordinarily memorable gun fight for the first time don't be afraid if you shit your pants out of sheer, mind-blown delight. It happens to the best of us. Or so I hear, anyway. In the scene, slow motion is used to great effect as is the destructible and constantly changing environment, an amazing assortment of automatic weaponry, gravity-defying acrobatics and the tightest outfits made of the finest leather you could ever imagine.

4 'Terminator 2' - The Cyberdyne Scene
If you like to see bullets ripping through office buildings, this one's for you. What makes this cool is that the Terminator has been instructed NOT to cause any fatalities. He uses a combination of non-lethal targeting and gas grenades to achieve this. For the finale, Arnold gets his hands on a mother effin' Gatling gun to shoot the ever living hell out of a department's worth of cop cars. Afterward, it’s his futuristic heads up display that lets him know that no fatalities occurred, so let's go ahead and trust that. Yeah...

3 'Equilibrium' - The Hallway Scene
Now, this is a total home run because of it’s frenetic, well-choreographed action. Equilibrium's world is a place where emotion is forbidden, but when it comes to things like gun fighting or hand to hand combat, mathematical precision and chess-like calculations of outcome are king. As much of a pain in the ass it would be to learn that crazy shit if were real, it's a blast to watch as Christian Bale struts his pre-Batman action prowess, as a well-practiced killer in the world of Equilibrium.

2 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' - The Bar Scene
This scene is set up by the Nazis (of course) coming in and demanding the staff of Ra headpiece from the movie's heroine, Marion. When she fails to produce it they resort to torture, but Indy arrives just in time to save the day. The gun fight that ensues is a whirlwind of action with excellent sound effects, a raging fire that threatens to engulf everyone, rough 'n tumble close quarters combat and even a little comedic relief in a moment of desperation. Its got stellar pacing and doesn’t let up, furthering along it’s outcome and thrilling the viewer.

1 'Saving Private Ryan' - The Sniper Scene
Though I'd love to talk about the incredible opening sequence on the beaches of Normandy, that's gonna have to stay classified as a "battle scene" rather than a "shoot out." So let's talk about the tour de force between the American and German sniper. This is rife with tension, making it a real nail-biter. What's really amazing, though, is the bullet the American lets fly right through his adversary's own rifle scope, that continues through his eye and out the back of his head, sealing the deal. Insta-kill, insta-awesome.
