Google cares about soon-to-be-fired China staff, takes them to Avatar

With all of the hubbub over the possibility of Google pulling out of China due to censorship concerns, it’s easy to forget about a couple of hundred people most affected by this change: Google China’s employees. But it’s okay, they got to see Avatar FOR FREE! So no worries, Google China, it’s all good now!

Google’s employees in China may soon be facing unemployment following the Internet giant’s ultimatum to Beijing, but the US firm let them know they are appreciated — by taking them to see “Avatar”.

The company bought more than 200 tickets for the blockbuster and allowed staff members to take the afternoon off on Thursday to see it, the Beijing Youth Daily reported Friday.

The Internet giant said this week it may abandon its operations in China, the world’s largest online market with 360 million web users, over web censorship and cyber attacks on its systems that allegedly originated in China.

It’d be pretty funny if the Chinese government intervened and made them watch a censored version of Avatar. I mean, you can’t expect a company to block the images of dead bodies in Tienanmen Square but allow the people to see a lush other planet in 3D where everyone is free and loving life and having sex with their stupid blue tails while playing with dragons. The handsome grey skies of Beijing might lack a certain appeal after seeing that. On the plus side, I doubt there are egg rolls or sesame chicken in Pandora. And Pandoran Yao Ming would just look ridiculous. Take that you blue, healthy-artery-having bastards.
