That’s it. We won. One of the most legendary 80s TV shows of all time is coming to the big screen. Manimal aired for an incredibly brief time – September 30, 1987 until December 17th of that same year. Only eight episodes were ever aired. But everybody who saw it remembers it.

Manimal starred British actor Simon MacCorkindale as Dr. Jonathan Chase, who somehow had the ability to transform his body into any animal. He learned it in Africa, because that’s where you go to learn that kind of thing. And, of course, he used that skill to fight crime. Paired with a female detective and a childhood friend, he went up against thieves, Russian spies and more before the show was cancelled for low ratings. NBC had scheduled it opposite Dallas, so that’s probably why.

Now Heat Vision is reporting that Sony Pictures Animation has bought the property and is planning on turning it into a feature film. Original show producer Glen E. Larson is attached to the picture, which will be a mix of live action and CGI animation. Sony has had a lot of success with 80s properties recently, with The Smurfs pulling in half a billion and an ALF movie in the works, but Manimal? That’s really reaching.

What do you think? Would you hit the theater for a Manimal movie?
