So is this Scientology or what? Paul Thomas Anderson’s new flick has a cloud of secrecy around it, especially when it comes to “The Cause,” the religious group headed by Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character, who bears quite a resemblance to L. Ron Hubbard. The filmmaker denies that it’s an allegory for the bizarre group, but I’m not so sure. What I am sure of is that this film looks really awesome. Joaquin Phoenix returns to acting from the abyss of weirdness he spent the last few years in, and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead is doing the score. The Master opens on October 12th.
