7 of the most disturbing moments on ‘Mad Men’
All of Mad Men’s boozing and whoring aside, there is a gravitas within the office and a certain respect for the work that grounds Don Draper and company and gives their world a certain believability. This serious backdrop — in which the average scene consists of men in suits talking — makes Mad Men’s most disturbing moments all the more shocking, painful and sometimes humorous. -Joe Donatelli

7 Freddie Rumson wets his pants
Mad Men features a lot of drinkers. But this is like saying a baseball team features a lot of hitters. Some hitters hit harder than others. Some drinkers drink harder than others. Freddie Rumson was one of those hard drinkers. He drank so hard he drunkenly wet his pants before a big meeting. It is always a shocking thing to see an adult man wet himself outside of a fraternity house setting.

6 Roger throws up lunch
As revenge for hitting on Don’s wife, Don takes his boss Roger Sterling out for lunch, fills him full of martinis and oysters and bribes the elevator guy to tell Roger the elevator is out of service, forcing Roger to walk 23 flights of stairs for a meeting with the Nixon campaign. When they reach the office lobby, Roger throws up in front of the Nixon people, who are disgusted even though they work for Richard Nixon.

5 Betty shoots the neighbor’s pigeons
Don’s wife Betty, who is essentially an 11-year-old child trapped in an adult woman’s body, is distressed when her daughter tells her that a neighbor threatened to shoot the Draper family dog for biting one of his pigeons. So the next day, with the kids gone, and the house quiet, Betty lights a cigarette, grabs a BB gun and shoots at the birds right in front of the neighbor. It’s the only cool thing she ever does.

4 Layne’s father beats him
Lane Pryce is the agency’s British import and, even though he’s an adult man of 40-or-50-something, his dad still pushes him around. After meeting Lane’s black girlfriend, the elder Price brains his son with a cane and steps on his fingers until he says he will return to the United Kingdom and reunite with his family. Other than that, dad seems like a real sweet guy.

3 Betty lets Sally play with a plastic bag on her head
Early in the first season Mother of the Year candidate Betty Draper shows how laid back 1960s parents were by letting Sally wear a potentially suffocating dry-cleaning bag while playing spaceman. Oh, Betty does give her a warning. "If the clothes from that dry-cleaning bag are on the floor of my closet, you're going to be a very sorry, young lady.” That’s good, solid parenting right there.

2 Lois runs over Guy's foot with a John Deere lawnmower
Brit Guy MacKendrick was brought into the agency to replace Lane and get the resident Americans to toe the line, but he wasn’t toeing anything after secretary Lois Sadler accidentally chopped off his foot with a lawnmower at an office party. The scene was a bloodbath, inspiring some of the darkest humor in the history of the series. Quipped Roger Sterling, "Somewhere in this business, this has happened before.”

1 Duck throws his dog out
There have been some tragic, almost-unwatchable scenes in the show’s history. Joan was raped. Pete may or may not have raped an au pair. Peggy gave away a baby. But nothing made fans’ blood boil like alcoholic Duck Phillips turning his Irish Setter Chauncey out into the cold. The scene set off a torrent of angry comments, even though no actual dog was abandoned by anybody.
