The prize is… time travel! Sort of. It used to be that you could keep things pretty simple with your reality TV shows. Just dump a bunch of buttholes on an island somewhere, roll the cameras and America would watch. But we’re getting jaded these days, so producers need to throw in a bunch of conceptual twists to sell their shows to the populace.

SyFy, the network previously most famous for Z-level monster movies starring washed up 80s actors, has been venturing into the reality marketplace lately, with their recent series Total Blackout a surprise hit. Deadline is reporting that they’ve just picked up a new competition series that fits in just fine with old Stargate reruns.

Called Opposite Worlds, it’s based on a Chilean reality show (those exist!) called Mundos Opuestos. Twenty contestants are split into two groups. One group lives in the “future,” where everything is awesome. All you need to do is push a button to get your heart’s desire delivered to you. The other group lives in the “past,” where everything sucks and you have to struggle to survive. And there’s a glass wall between the two time periods, so players can watch each other. Every week, all of the players must compete in a variety of challenges to determine who gets to kick it in the future, who gets to suck it in the past, and who has to go home. SyFy has ordered twelve episodes of the Americanized version, to air twice a week.

Here’s the first episode of Mundos Opuestos, if you’re confident in your Spanish. It looks pretty interesting from here.
