“Poochinski” might be the greatest show ever to not get on TV
Procedural cop shows (every show that ends with some crime/mystery and ends with some mook solving it within 42 minutes) are literally the lifeblood of the TV industry along with drunken whores doing stupid things on camera. So given that, it might be time to revisit this 1990 pilot of a show called “Poochinski” about a cop (played by Peter Boyle) who gets reincarnated as a TALKING DOG.
I don’t even think the love I have for this creation is ironic. I need to know more about this poorly-crafted animatronic dog inhabited by the soul of a dead cop. That scene with him in front of the mirror might be the most soul-wrenching performance by a dog that I’ve seen since the extras on the DVD release of Air Bud: Golden Receiver when Air Bud was taking performance enhancing drugs and, in a haze of steroids and prescription painkillers and self-loathing, violently murdered a hooker when he couldn’t get an erection. But that didn’t sate his pain at all because the real person he wanted dead was himself. I could see how that might have been too dark for the rest of the film’s tone.
