Advice columnist in trouble after telling reader to “cut ex’s face”

Host of the UK soccer show “The Football Factory” Danny Dyer does an advice column monthly for the British ZOO Magazine. But one tidbit of advice is causing an uproar overseas: Dyer told a recently dumped boyfriend to “cut [his] ex’s face [so that] no one will love her.” A logical bit of advice, to be sure.

According to a report in the Telegraph:

Danny Dyer Gumball 3000 Rally 2007 309x205 Advice columnist in trouble after telling reader to cut exs faceDyer, 32, star of the Football Factory, dispensed his advice in the latest edition of the “lad’s mag” to a heartbroken boyfriend who had asked how best to recover from a break-up.

He first told the reader, 23, identified only as “Alex, Manchester”, to go out “with the boys” and get “on the booze” then find a new girlfriend so he could dump her and “break her heart”.

Then he concluded his reply with the words: “Of course, the other option is to cut your ex’s face, and then no one will want her.”

You may have noticed over the years that I make a lot of edgy jokes here. Here’s the problem: When you’re writing things down, whether they’re meant in jest or not, it will sometimes come off as completely serious.

For example, if I said to you “I bet that guy likes green pants” on a Web site you’d go, “Gee, that gentleman must like green pants. Why else would the writer report that?” But if I said to you in person, “Heh, I bet that guy over there likes him some green pants or sumpthin’,” you’d go, “Ha, that was absolutely sarcastic. That man probably hates green pants! Well played!”

Either way, let’s hope “Alex in Manchester” (if that is his real name) doesn’t end up leaving a series of women looking like John Locke in the first season of “Lost” because of this.
