Canadian car dealer has “used women” push used cars in new ads
An Ontario Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge dealer named Dale Wurfel is under fire for a recent print ad campaign that utilizes a photo of an attractive women and says that she’s “used” to sell automobiles. As you may have guessed, the usual suspects are in an uproar.
Sociological writer Gwen Sharp, via Jezebel, says:
I suppose someone could argue that the message that you shouldn’t “care” whether your women/cars are “used” rejects the sexual double standard, but the objectification and the implication that non-virgin women are “used” undermine any apparent rejection of that double standard.
Copyranter is more annoyed with the unoriginality of the campaign, citing a 2008 BMW ad that said the same thing:
Hey Dale—have you seen this sexxxy used girl used BMW ad from three years ago? Hate to think you didn’t think up this beaut of an ad all by yourself.
But obviously the big problem being missed here is that they’re likening an attractive women who’s taken a dong or twenty to a Dodge Stratus with 100,000 miles on it. I’d rather get to my destination safely nuzzled in the most Tauntaun-like cavernous womb than have the world know I’m driving a car that would have been driven by Al Bundy.
