High school cheerleader gets punished harder than football player for drinking

Brittney Hosac was just your average high school cheerleader in Arizona, having fun, waving pom poms, presumably having sexy pillow fights. But then in April, she was cited for underage drinking at a party and was subsequently banned from cheerleading. Sucks. But, worse, there were guys from her high school the same age. Their punishment? Having to run extra laps at practice.

cheerleaders drinking 275x214 High school cheerleader gets punished harder than football player for drinking Hosac, not pictured left but what is pictured is probably a realistic (and sexy) dramatization, is fighting the system in an article in today’s Arizona Republic. Hosac tells the Republic:

“I know I did something wrong and had to pay for my actions but it seems like I got a much harsher punishment than other people,” she said.

[Hosac's mother Holly] Walter believes her daughter’s suspension is excessive but admitted that the rules for cheerleaders are clearly spelled out. Her objection is with Red Mountain’s inconsistency when it came to disciplining other students involved.

“Why is it that other kids in the same exact situation will be allowed to participate in sports next year and my daughter won’t?” Walter said.

Hosac’s school, Red Mountain High School, says it’s just a difference between the way the cheerleading squad is handled compared to other varsity sports where the coaches are allowed to determine the punishment. The Mesa Public Schools’s athletic director said, basically, that those are the rules and Hosac has to pay the price for her error in judgment.

In related news, I know one state I’ll no longer be plying underaged girls with wine coolers in. Your loss, Arizona!

Seriously though, I’m not exactly Feminism McGee here, but it does seem kind of crappy that the football team can drink and fingerbang all they please while a cheerleader can’t do the same without getting one of her biggest activities taken away from her. That’s quite a bit misogynist. Plus, hate to break it to schools, but if you have a bunch of high school parties where only men can attend and underage drink, that’s really not much better. Unless you’re really into a gay porn parody of “Friday Night Lights.” In which case, jackpot.
