High school punishes kids for wearing Christmas sweaters

I think the ironic celebration of the holidays in the form of gaudy Christmas sweaters is kind of lame. But one Virginia high school’s punishment of a group that called themselves the “Christmas Sweater Club” just seems ridiculous, even by oversensitive public school standards.

christmas sweater club 296x214 High school punishes kids for wearing Christmas sweaters Ten students at Battlefield High School in Manassas, Virginia faced detention and other punishment as a result of their involvement in the Christmas Sweater Club.

One of the students involved told WUSA that the school said they were “maliciously wounding other kids.”

The Club believes that the accusation stems from them throwing candy canes to other students at the halls.

Another club member told WUSA that an administrator told him that “the candy canes could be used as weapons by sucking on them and making them have sharp points.” The student said that no one had done that [ED. NOTE: Presumably because this isn't "OZ" and most high school aged kids tend not to need to shiv someone in the cafeteria].

When reached for comment, school principal Amy Etheridge-Conti said they did more than hand out candy and cheer, but she refused to comment specifically on the matter.

So in summary, no one involved seems to know what they did wrong. And it couldn’t be THAT serious, i.e. they didn’t viciously sodomize freshman boys in the locker room while wearing Christmas sweaters, since they only got detention and clean-up duty. Unless sodomizing freshman boys is so common at this high school that it’s now a slap on the wrist punishment. Hmm. What’s your deal, Battlefield High School?

UPDATE: Commenter BHS Student says the portrait of the situation we got from WUSA may not be so accurate.

I go to that school. Some of those boys are just bullies. My friends have had the candy canes THROWN at them. There were HUNDREDS left on the floor since the boys decided it would be fun to throw them at people, then throw them into the air. They think they are above everyone and that they will never get in trouble. They have music on when they walk down the hallways (against the rules!) and then don’t listen to anyone when they tell them to turn the music off. They DESERVE what they are getting. I’m sick of their “I’m too cool” attitude.

P.S. They were saying “Merry F_ing Christmas” to random students they don’t know. I know that really cheers me up when I’m trying to do schoolwork.

So, in short, they might be dicks. Either way, Christmas sweaters!
