Homeless man finds $3,300, returns it
Dave Tally was an Arizona-area homeless man who seemingly hit the jackpot when he found a bag filled with $3,300 cash. But he somewhat surprisingly did the right thing by turning it in. What happened next was even more amazing.
Tally, homeless primarily due to recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, found the bag of money and brought it to the Tempe Community Action Agency in the hopes they’d found the money’s rightful owner.
And they did. The money belonged to an Arizona State student who was bringing the cash to buy a used car.
The expression “Generosity is its own reward” comes to mind with the story. Fortunately, enough people were so moved by Tally’s story that he found other rewards.
Tally received dozens of checks from people looking to help him after hearing his story. He even received job offers from people who want to see him get back on his feet.
Tally told the New York Times that he heard from a fellow homeless person, “Thanks, man. You made us all look good.”
I’m a pretty cynical person so sometimes, it’s really heartening to see a story like this. Good for you, Mr. Tally. I wish I were half as good of a person.
That said, I’d totally steal the $3,300 from that college kid if I had the chance. If you’re dropping bags of money filled with thousands of dollars, you don’t deserve to keep it. In fact, I’d like to take the money from the college kid, then give it back to the homeless dude. Well, minus processing fees. Still, that $30 would really help Dave Tally out.
