“I Heart Boobies” breast cancer bracelet gets teen suspended from high school
Breast cancer is a serious problem and some people like to wear bracelets to support the cause of fighting it. However, one 15-year-old wore a bracelet which read “I Heart Boobies” to support breast cancer awareness and, you guessed it, the school punished him.
Hunter Cooper, a sophomore at Rocklin High School in California, began wearing a pink survivor bracelet in March to honor his grandmother who died of the disease before he was born. His mother then gave him a black brace that said “I Heart Boobies” on it which she got from her doctors’ office.
Hunter wore the bracelet to school and, once school officials spotted it, they asked him to remove it.
Hunter told the local ABC affiliate, “I’m wearing it in honor of my grandmother. I don’t see it as an offensive thing at all.”
The school is saying that the breast cancer cause isn’t the problem (obviously), but that word “boobies” is offensive and inappropriate. They also disciplined another girl who refused to turn over her bracelet which had the same thing.
The school claims that they have not suspended or disciplining any student for wearing a bracelet or shirt with the insignia but Hunter’s mother told KXTV:
“Without having a discussion and handing out penalties first, I think that’s a real problem,” said Danielle Cooper. “They need to inform us as parents. I’d like them to handle the subject matter as mature adults. I’d like the staff to take a stand, one way or another. If they banned (the bracelets), and why they banned them, we should receive notice.”
I’m sure that Hunter Cooper wasn’t totally unaware of how some people might perceive his bracelet, so I won’t act like he’s totally innocent. But it does seem kind of silly that a high school would care so much about a word that are one of the first words that four-year-olds pick up and giggle at. It’s almost immature for the school to handle it this way.
First a public school keeps a gay girl from going to prom, now they’re keeping a boy from showing his love of boobs. Make up your mind, school.
