JC Penney t-shirt declares girls too pretty to do homework

Have you not done your daily perusal of JC Penney girls’ t-shirts like I do? Well, shame on you and your normal e-shopping habits. Petitions are sweeping the Internet over a new shirt from the company that declares pretty girls shouldn’t have to do homework.

Screen Shot 2011 08 31 at 2.15.27 PM JC Penney t shirt declares girls too pretty to do homework The shirt, pictured left, reads:

“I’m too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me.”

And is accompanied by a product description saying:

“Who has time for homework when there’s a new Justin Bieber album out? She’ll love this tee that’s just as cute and sassy as she is.”

A petition on Change.org reached over 1,600 signatures as of this afternoon, resulting in JC Penney pulling the shirt from their Web site.

The clothing store’s spokespeople released the following statement in response:

We agree that the “Too pretty” t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale. Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. We would like to apologize for any concern we may have caused and assure you that we are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that [our customers] have come to expect.

A prompt reaction by JC Penney for sure. At the same time, I feel like it’s not enough. Mostly because now they’re discriminating against people who love Justin Bieber and are too pretty for the homework. If I were in school right now, I’d be like, “Thank fucking God someone finally made a shirt just for me.” But now I’d be all like, “:(” and cutting myself. You happy you made theoretical pre-teen me cut myself, JC Penney? This fictional blood is on YOUR HANDS.
