Journalist quits job after slow news day

A Norwegian public news reporter lived the dream of every journalist and writer this weekend, quitting in the middle of her news broadcast after a slow news day.

nrk 149x214 Journalist quits job after slow news day Reporter Pia Beathe Pedersen accused her employers at public broadcasting company NRK of placing too much pressure on the staff to churn out news, culminating in her quitting her job after having nothing of note to report.

During a live Saturday broadcast, Pedersen told listeners that she wouldn’t read the news and that “nothing important has happened.”

Pedersen then took the rest of her two minute report to say she was quitting because she “wanted to be able to eat properly again and be able to breathe.” UPDATE: According to a surly commenter below who’s up on Norwegian media, Pedersen was an overworked temp worker lashing out against the man.

I have no doubt this lady’s job was difficult but it seems like this wasn’t necessarily the best way to end her time at Radio Norway. It wasn’t even the best way to send a message. When the only two people to hear you railing against the man are two guys named Sven who only wanted to hear the traffic report, you’re not really railing against the man.

At the same time, I do feel for the woman. Slow news days on this site are miserable enough. I can’t imagine a job where you can’t just coast by on adorable animal videos and jokes about sexual assault. Neither translates too well on radio, no matter how angrily you pantomime.
