Man robs bank of $1 to try to get free jail health care
James Verone may be the personification of the failings of the American health care system. But he tried to solve his problem in the most creative way possible…by robbing a North Carolina bank of $1.
Late last week, Verone robbed a local bank, but without any gun or weaponry. Instead, he handed a teller a note.
The note said, “This is a bank robbery. Please only give me one dollar.”
The 59-year-old Verone then told the teller he’d be waiting in a nearby chair for police.
Verone came up with this idea when trying to think of a way around his lack of medical insurance. Verone suffers from a growth on his chest, two ruptured discs, and chronic problems with his left foot. He believed he could get off with a three year sentence, fix himself up, then retreat into collecting social security payments.
The jail doctor accused Verone of manipulating the system, but he doesn’t care.
“If it is called manipulation,” Verone told local news station WLBZ, “[T]hen [it's] out of necessity because I need medical care.”
Small problem: Verone expected a three year sentence but, due to the size of the robbery, he may only be charged with larceny, leaving him with a decently sized gap in his plan to retire to Myrtle Beach.
Well, on the one hand, we vilify certain sects of society for abusing public programs, so we probably shouldn’t find this dude’s story as charming because it’s slightly more relatable and he looks sort of like Michael McDonald. But it’s hard not to feel bad for the guy due to his circumstance.
Then again, so long as it gets decently sodomized in prison, I’ll allow our country to foot the bill for his medical care. I imagine a halo for spinal surgery would make a great handle for some D/L thug looking to really get torque on his rectal penetration.
