New ad campaign says you can fix your gay son with karate lessons

The idea that gay people aren’t as manly as heterosexual men seems to be something of an antiquated notion (or at least should be). So a Miami ad agency’s idea to promote RDCA Karate by using a presumably gay young boy seems, well, not so progressive.

I’m a big fan of the martial arts having trained in MMA for a couple years. It is very good for your physical health and also good for teaching discipline to all sorts of people. It also requires a degree of toughness that, I suppose, does not jibe with the preconceived notions middle America would have of gay people. That said, there have been a lot of gay men and women whom I’ve seen training who would probably break my limbs seven times over if it came down to that (presuming both groups could avoid my kissable lips long enough).

Plus, if you’re a homophobic dad afraid of your kid turning out to be a gay, is putting him in a class where he’s going to be able to sweatily roll around with other boys a good idea? AND he’s learning a skill-set that will allow him physical leverage over everyone? If you wanted to create some sort of father-hating, gay imposer-of-wills, then job well done, Fictional Father in the Ads.

Stop your burgeoning little cross-dressing queen in his tracks: send him to karate class. [Copyranter]
