Prison makes inmates pedal a bike to watch TV

As a cost-cutting measure, a rough jail in Arizona is adopting a new technology called “Pedal Vision” to power the inmates’ TV watching. Beginning with the female inmates, prisoners will be required to bike an equivalent of how long they’re watching TV in order to generate the power needed to run the TVs. Because what we as a society need is hardened criminals with better cardiovascular endurance.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio debuted the pilot program called “Pedal Vision” at Tent City Jail in Phoenix, Arizona, where inmates already live in harsh conditions in army surplus tents, sweltering in summer temperatures as high as 122F (50C) and freezing in winter.

Under the program inmates pedal customized stationary bikes that generate 12 volts of electricity, with one hour of pedaling equaling one hour of television.

“I started with the females because they seemed more receptive to the idea,” Arpaio said.

Of course the women are more receptive to exercising for their TV. If there’s one thing women love, it’s staying in perfect shape no matter the circumstance. That’s why, if I notice a girlfriend gaining a little weight, I just attach a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps to the back of a car and drag it along like a horse with a carrot on a stick. They may not want to run three miles for a pair of formerly expensive, scraped up heels, but it’s just their nature.

At the same time, I really would hope they don’t expand this program to the men. A lot of criminals basically come out of jail looking like Mark McGuire with a teardrop tattoo as is, we really don’t need to A) Give them the ability to sprint for long periods of time or B) Subconsciously remind them that physicality is the best way to get what they want. Though if a guy challenged me to a foot race for my wallet instead of stabbing me in the sternum, I guess that would be something of an upgrade. Decisions.
