STUNNER: Using a grill to heat your home might kill you

A Florida (Florida? No way! I had no clue there were stupid people in Florida) family had their electricity out and, in the midst of a cold wave with temperatures in the 30s, needed heat. So they thought outside the box and went with a resourceful solution…they turned on a charcoal grill in the middle of their living room, which gave them carbon monoxide poisoning and sent them to the hospital.

A family of three was sickened Sunday by carbon monoxide poisoning while using a charcoal barbecue grill to heat their home, fire officials said.

A 77-year-old man, his 72-year-old wife and their 41-year-old daughter were treated by St. Petersburg Fire Rescue paramedics, then taken to St. Petersburg General Hospital.

According to St. Petersburg Fire, the family was using the grill to heat their home at 1201 32nd St. N because the electricity was out. After using the grill as a heat source for about 12 hours, the family became sick and firefighters responded just after 12:30 p.m.

There’s a complete lack of common sense amongst a certain segment of the population that just horrifies me. These people have an average age of 63-years-old between them and they thought that STARTING A CHARCOAL GRILL IN A CONFINED SPACE was not only a good idea, but also a crafty way around the electricity man’s nebulous business methods. I bet one of them literally had a light bulb appear above their head as they went, “I’ve got an idea!” and the other two in the room went, “Wow, I wish I had me one of them fancy idears too, oh wise one.” Here’s a good rule of thumb: If you can sear a steak with your genius idea, odds are that it’s probably not going to be good for your health. I’m surprised they didn’t just light themselves on fire in the hopes that it’d keep them warm and provide them with eternal life like “that Freddy Krueger feller we saw on the Tee Vee.”
