Two Rutgers students accused of secretly filming dormmate having sex
Colleges often have an “anything goes” reputation where everything short of violence is all under the umbrella of kids being kids. But sometimes that can go a bit too far, like two students who filmed a dormmate having sex with someone.
Prosecutors say that Ravi is also charged with two additional counts of invasion of privacy for attempting to use the camera second time two days later.
The duo secretly got the camera into their fellow student’s room and transmitted nude images and video over the Internet (obviously) without consent, a more serious charge than if the camera had only recorded locally (take notes, creeps) that could land them significant jail time.
It’s unclear as to whether the person being filmed was female or male. If the latter, I’m going to be even more disappointed in this story. UNSEXY UPDATE: Yep, it’s a male. *sad trombone music*
The biggest surprise to me is that Dharun, whom I presume is male, was able to get Molly Wei on board. Secretly filming people having sex is such a quintessentially male crime. If anything, I guess this just shows how far women have come in terms of gender equality. Not only are they CEOs and bankers, they’re now also creepy voyeurs. You’ve come a long way, baby.
SAD UPDATE: Police found the car and the belongings of the student being filmed on the side of the George Washington Bridge. The student is believed to have committed suicide. That’s not going to help these two’s case.
