VIDEO: Golden-voiced homeless fellow Ted Williams’ first commercial
How famous is homeless man with the golden voice Ted Williams? We blew up his story about being offered a job by the Cleveland Cavaliers a week ago, but now he’s famous enough where behind the scenes footage of Ted doing a commercial for Kraft’s Macaroni and Cheese gets hundreds of thousands of views.
I read a couple recent takes that were interesting and have kind of adjusted my view of Mr. Williams a bit. Mostly that the guy had a good job in radio before his demons took him out of his job; now he’s leapfrogging countless tens of thousands of unemployed or poorly employed voiceover professionals just because it’s a “fun” story. My counterpoint: That’s probably true, but the fifteen minutes of fame here are fleeting at best, so good for this guy for doing what he can with the opportunity while he has a chance.
At the same time, I think we should probably not pretend this story is all good times and redemption. Kraft should have gone a bit more fun with this video, showing how cheesy and delicious their food is by using secret backstage footage showing Williams in a bathroom stall cooking Mac ‘n’ Cheese with a lighter and a spoon, only to have him look up and go, “Well, this would be a problem if Kraft Homestyle Macaroni and Cheese weren’t so darn delicious and good for you!” in his sultry radio voice. Sigh. Opportunities lost.
