VIDEO: High school senior Kayla K. comes out during MLK Jr. Day Assembly
You can like or dislike homosexuality all you want, but I think most people would agree that high school kids offing themselves over their sexual inclinations is kind of a bummer. So this is a nice story. One Maria Carrillo High School senior named Kayla K. came out during her school’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day assembly. Her speech is strong.
Good for Kayla, being mature beyond her years and doing something that many people wouldn’t be able to face at twice her age. It’s hard enough giving a speech in high school for most kids, let alone facing up to something many people view negatively.
That said, this all seems needlessly dramatic (especially the person who produced the video and, apparently, just learned how to do sliding title cards). In fact, the speech could have one second of her saying, “I’m g-” followed by everyone nodding unsurprised, finishing with a ceremonial sharing of punch and pie. It would have been far less powerful..but still, punch and pie.
