VIDEO: Justin Bieber ‘freestyle’ raps again to the delight of no one
In a misguided quest for authenticity, Justin Bieber seems to be on some sort of freestyle rap tour of the major hip-hop stations in the US. First, he laid down a decently received freestyle on Power 106 in Los Angeles and now he’s rapping on NYC’s Hot 97. Here’s the video.
One of Bieber’s lines stood out the most to me. When he says, “People say I’m white so I couldn’t do it like this.” No, Justin. It’s not because your white. It’s because you’re Justin Bieber. You have the hip hop relevance of Freddie Mercury’s t-cell count. You’re a wonderful talent for a wonderfully large group of pre-teen and teen girls who can coerce their parents to spend thousands on you. Cherish that. LeBron James is great at basketball…that’s why he doesn’t decide to do a Broadway play.
Stay in your lane, Justin. All of a sudden deciding you’re a middling freestyle rapper doesn’t make you any different, more authentic, or culturally dynamic. Just mimic the electric slide, do some autotune, and cash the checks. Step away from the mic and pick up some tampons for Selena Gomez. Let’s not make this a bigger deal than it needs to be.
