VIDEO: What surfing the Internet in 1998 was like

Will Brinson

Many of you might not recall the Internet world of 1998. After all, if you’re like me, the only things that come to mind about that year were hating my parents, the legitimate difficulty of getting a hold of porn and the official death of grunge thanks to Pearl Jam releasing “Yield.”

As it turns out though, there was still plenty of Internet awesomeness going on. Or, perhaps, not awesomeness: there are no pictures of Paula Deen riding things, there is not a substantial amount of bacon, and there are certainly no GIFs of corgis happily running around corners.

In fact, as you can see in this 10-minute (!) video that a man recorded of himself surfing the Internet, things were pretty GD boring. In fact, it becomes painfully obvious why porn and dating without actually dating were some of the earliest reasons for which the World Wide Web was so quickly adopted.
