Virginia Republican chair resigns over joke offensive to black people and dogs
David Batholomew was the chair of Virginia Beach’s Republican party. As of last night, he resigned his position. The reason for the resignation may be the best one ever: He forwarded an email which would best be classified as a “racist dog joke.”
Another local Virginia GOP chairman told the Virginian-Pilot that Bartholomew forwarded the email without reading the contents when “he was first getting familiar with the Internet.”
The joke in question? Via Gawker:
MY DOG
I went down this morning to sign up my Dog for welfare.
At first the lady said, “Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare”.
So I explained to her that my Dog is black, unemployed, lazy, can’t speak English and has no frigging clue who his Daddy is.
So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify…
My Dog gets his first check Friday.
Is this a great country or what?
As the owner of a brown dog, I am highly offended (and pondering whether I should take Mr. Bartholomew’s advice). As someone fairly proficient in the art of punchlines, I’m even more offended. I mean seriously, way to bury the lede there. I expect much better comedic stylings from someone in as hilarious a position as “Virginia Beach GOP Chairman.” Wait, what? He seriously believes those things? How meta.
