Are Gummy Bears soaked in vodka the new trend?
There will never be a shortage of ways for underage kids to get drunk, and parents will always be a few steps behind. The trend of soaking gummy bears in liquor isn’t anything new, but it had remained a secret from most people for years. This past week, news outlets across the country have been warning of this “new trend” of vodka soaked gummy bears, so I guess teen secret is finally out.
Teens have been increasingly using gummy bears as a way of concealing alcohol from parents and authorities. By soaking the bears in vodka or rum, they are free to walk the streets drinking without having to sneak sips or hide a bottle. While the news segment’s intention is obviously to make parents aware of this trend, they may have inadvertently introduced a great idea to a large number of under-age kids who were unaware of the idea. The YouTube tutorial has jumped from 17,000 to 50,000 views since this news clip went live.
There are a few things to note from this segment. First, you can absolutely tell if a gummy bear has been soaking in something because they grow to nearly double their original size. Also, if you are the one who made the batch, you know exactly how much alcohol is in them. Finally, if the woman who was surprised kids came up with this is your mom, I’m jealous. If this surprises her, there is no end to the things with which you could get away.
Alcohol soaked gummy bears aren’t just for teens trying to get a buzz under the watchful eye of their parents . I made reference to Rummy Bears in a post about the Grilled Cheese Martini, so hopefully I’m not the one who blew it for everyone. Now that it’s out in the open though, we are free to discuss how great they are. They are a perfect addition to a party, regardless of age. People always want something interesting to set their soiree apart from last Friday’s, and these will certainly do the trick. They’re also an ideal way to take alcohol into a venue that doesn’t allow outside beverages or drinking at all. Nobody will question a bag full of sugary snacks, but these little buggers can pack a punch.
While I have eaten quite a few in my day, I have never actually made a batch of drunk gummies. Because I like to go the extra mile for the Guyism readers, I am going to try a few different ways of preparing them. I’ll report back next week with the ideal recipe for all of you.
