Beer made with real gold is the latest booze gimmick

Colin Joliat Staff Writer

There are plenty of gimmick beers out there, but “Re” Golden Lager from the Czech Republic may be the richest. It has actual drinkable gold in every bottle.

Let’s get your first question out of the way right now. It’s about $28 worth of gold, assuming you could put it back together and sell it at market value. You probably can’t do either of those things though, so don’t think too hard about this one.

With $28 in gold already in the bottle, which is tasteless and therefore pointless, it will likely cost a minimum of $35. And while I can’t track down an actual price, I think we all know they won’t be charging the minimum. Given that I’m not willing to pay more than $1 per ounce for beer, you can be sure I won’t be trying this one.

Everyone seems to be assuming that that 500 bottles already produced are all that will be made, but I don’t read it that way. It seems to me that if a customer requests it and is willing to pay, they will continue making it. So while it may seem like a ridiculously exclusive cool-kids club that get to drink “Re,” you can likely have it as well. It might just cost you more than a few Sacagawea dollars.
