Bell’s Hopslam coming in January

Just when I couldn’t be more pissed off that it’s winter, I receive a dose of good news. Bell’s Brewery has announced that Hopslam will be hitting shelves in January. It’s not that there was any speculation that it wouldn’t be sold, it’s just nice to get the news that it’s soon.

Starting with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle & culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops, Bell’s Hopslam Ale possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell’s repertoire. Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit, and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style.

This beer is a must try for any hop-lover. One thing that makes this different from other over-hopped beers is that many of the hops are chosen for their aromatic qualities as opposed to bittering. That’s not to say the beer isn’t bitter, but not as much as you would expect from a double IPA. The honey also does well to add a little sweetness and round it out to the perfect beer.

The one downside is that it’s expensive. It averages about $18 for a 6-pack depending on where you buy, but it’s absolutely worth $3 per beer though, especially because it comes in at 10% ABV. If you are really hung up on the price though, just sit on a stool while you drink it and pretend you’re at a bar. Then you’ll be getting one of the best beers in the world for Bud Light prices.
