Can craft beer solve unemployment?

Colin Joliat Staff Writer

With the 99% still raging against the machine, I thought I’d do my part to help them out. While the beer industry’s overall sales are down, the craft business is booming. This leads not only to more delicious beer, but also more jobs. Everyone wins!

If you’ve never head of Tröegs Brewery, I’d highly recommend them. Unfortunately, their distribution as of now is only out East, but if that’s where you live and you’re still looking for a Christmas beer, you can’t go wrong with “Mad Elf.”

Here’s a couple fun facts from the Brewers Association:

Craft brewers currently provide an estimated 100,000 jobs in the U.S., including serving staff in brewpubs.
Overall, U.S. beer sales were down an estimated 1.0% by volume in 2010.
Growth of the craft brewing industry in 2010 was 11% by volume and 12% by dollars compared to growth in 2009 of 7.2% by volume and 10.3% by dollars.
Craft Brewer Dollar sales were up 15% in the first half of 2011.

That’s right folks, beer is doing more than just getting people drunk. While I’m not suggesting that you take up homebrewing with the expectation that you will someday open your own brewpub or microbrewery, it may be time to look more seriously into the business aspect of alcohol as opposed to just the inebriating effects.
