Celebrate International Stout Day with one of these great beers
I know I already told you that today is National Sandwich Day, but the world is bigger than just America. We can’t claim November 3rd all for ourselves and our greedy appetites. Today is also, and more intoxicatingly, International Stout Day.
To celebrate, I thought I’d list some of the best stouts the US has to offer. Hey, just because it’s an international holiday doesn’t mean we are going to tread into import territory. By now you all know that I’m not big on rating beers. It’s far too subjective to be relevant coming from a single person. Instead, I turned to BeerAdvocate to find the official top 5 stouts. With at least 149 ratings a piece, you don’t have to worry about a couple drunk bloggers skewing the scores for these brews. All five were given A+ grades, which is pretty impressive considering there are only about 30 A+ ratings have been given across 1000s of beers.
1) Rare Bourbon County Stout – Goose Island
2) Canadian Breakfast Stout – Founders
3) Vanilla Bean Aged Dark Lord – Three Floyds
4) Kentucky Breakfast Stout – Founders
5) Kate the Great – Portsmouth

Even without ratings I could have guessed that most of those would have been in the top five purely based on the amount of hype they get. Unfortunately, unless you are either a master beer sniper or have been hoarding for awhile, you probably won’t be drinking any of these today. Some aren’t in season, and others involve lining up for days like moms did for the first run of Nintendo Wii. (Wiis? Wies? Wiies?). Hell, I couldn’t even find a picture of the most recent Vanilla Bean Aged Dark Lord.
I don’t want to leave you high and dry with nothing to drink on this most excellent holiday. I’ve decided to share a few of my favorite stouts that are more readily available. I don’t know what any of them are rated, and I don’t want to in case it turns out people actually think they suck.
Old Rasputin – North Coast
Ten FIDY – Oskar Blues
Expedition – Bell’s
Blackout Stout – Great Lakes
Yeti – Great Divide
If you head somewhere with a decent beer selection you should be able to find a couple of those to help you toast to International Stout Day. I suppose I didn’t put much thought into where these breweries were located and happened to leave out the East coast. For those of you out there who want something closer to home, check out Victory’s “Storm King Stout.” Victory makes a handful of great beers, and that’s no exception. So what will you be drinking tonight?
