Celebrate National Sandwich Day with a food inspired cocktail
Today is the day for which your stomach has been waiting. That’s right folks, November 3rd is National Sandwich Day. It’s not all “So fast you’ll freak” and “Eat fresh” though. As your resident alcohol writer, I’ll be helping you turn this into just another excuse to drink.
Early on I introduced you to the Grilled Cheese Martini. The idea behind that was simply putting sandwiches in vodka in order for the liquor to absorb the flavor. The reverse, crafting cocktails to actually taste like foods, has been around for ages. These drinks seldom make an appearance because the idea isn’t all that appealing. Recently, however, I’ve seen a few different food-inspired drinks at hoity-toity cocktail lounges. To date, I still haven’t ordered one out of fear of wasting a drink on something disgusting. If only I could try one out at home.
And that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Last year the people at Flor de Caña, a Nicaraguan rum, sought out mixologists to create recipes meant to taste like some of our favorite foods. I’ve yet to try any of these, but I am determined to track down the ingredients in the BLT and make it. I picture it tasting like a more unique Bloody Mary. It’s possible that I’m more adventurous then most, or just certifiably insane, but I have to admit I’m intrigued. I’ll be sure to report back on how it tastes for those of you not brave enough to whip together your own liquid lunch. Has anyone else tried a food-inspired cocktail?
This reminds me that I still owe you the ideal recipe for alcohol soaked gummy bears. Keep an eye out for that next week so you can show up to parties with the perfect booze snack.
