Grateful Dead wine will steal your face
On the heels of yesterday’s news about a beer brewed in tribute to Pearl Jam comes another music-inspired alcohol, and this time it’s classy. That’s right, today we are talking wine. The folks over at Wines That Rock have been cranking out rock ‘n’ roll wines since 2009, and their newest offering is Grateful Dead “Steal Your Face Red Blend.”
Beyond the varietal and price, chances are you have no idea what you’re getting when you pick up a bottle of wine. For a lot of guys, that means the label on the bottle is the going to be the major selling point. This has led me to buy bottles like “Bitch”, “Arrogant Frog”, and “Bo Merlot” among many other ridiculously branded wines. Don’t think, though, that “Steal Your Face Red Blend” is just another novelty label slapped on a terrible wine hoping to sell one bottle to as many people as possible.
Wines That Rock are crafted from the hands and vision of Mendocino Wine Co. winemaker Mark Beaman, whose talent and passions are quality, sustainability and pure rock ‘n’ roll. The process for making “Steal Your Face” began by listening and discovering the vibe and intricacies of the band during their legendary multi-night performance at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in 1974.
“To capture the essence of the live energy for Grateful Dead’s ‘Steal Your Face,’ we chose to meld several varietals into one,” said Beaman. ”Just as the band members would segue through various musical styles, this wine’s far reaching flavors melt seamlessly from one to the next. In honor of the Grateful Dead’s famous improvisational concerts that have brought joy to so many, this wine celebrates diversity and freedom of experimentation.”
I haven’t had the pleasure of trying this wine yet, but hopefully I’ll correct that soon enough. If you need more than a cool label and a unique story to sell you, how about peppered bacon? That’s right, according to the tasting notes that is the flavor you get to savor while jamming to the Grateful Dead.
This isn’t Mendocino Wine Co’s first foray into uniquely branded wines. Through Wines That Rock they have made Rolling Stones “Forty Licks Merlot,” The Police “Synchronicity Red Blend,” Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon Cabernet Sauvignon,” and “Woodstock Chardonnay.” They’re also the people behind Mike Ditka’s “Kick Ass Red.” Coach may plaster his name on everything from salsa to steak, but I can attest to that being a good wine.
You can purchase the wine through their website or in retailers nation wide. Unfortunately at this point I haven’t been able to figure out exactly which retailers, so you’ll just have to look next time you are cruising the aisles of the liquor store. They have a variety pack online that seems like your best bet if you want to try all the different rock options.
