Have a cocktail for National Vodka Day
It seems as if everything has a special day. Already this month we’ve celebrated World Vegetarian Day, National Custodial Workers Day, and National Denim Day, and as you probably know, it’s only the 4th. Thankfully, today’s celebration is at least a little more useful. It is National Vodka Day. I couldn’t find even the slightest bit of information about the origin of this ridiculously made up holiday, but who am I to deny the trend of drinking vodka on a random Tuesday in October?
Vodka is by far the most popular spirit in the world, especially among drinkers who love the taste of mixers. Because of it’s nearly tasteless and odorless nature, it is a fan favorite for people who want to get drunk but don’t enjoy the taste of alcohol. And if you believe the advertising, you can drink brands like Skyy all night and never have a hangover too! I’ve proved that theory wrong numerous times, but I like to keep the dream alive. It’s a staple of just about any college night out, from girls throwing back Vodka Sodas to guys rapidly pounding Vodka Redbulls (a fan favorite of the aging Mountain Dew crowd). With the increase in flavor infused vodkas, it’s dominatation over the market is ever growing.
One place you won’t typically find Vodka in abundance though is in bars known for their cocktails. Because of its incredibly limited taste profile, most upscale cocktail lounges, with the obvious exception of martini bars, will only have one or two options on the menu. I checked in on the menus from four of the top mixologists in Chicago, and only one had more than two vodka based drinks offered. If you are craving a fancy cocktail though, I’ve taken the liberty of copying one of each of their recipes for you.
The Violet Hour – “Slow Realization”
Tito’s, Lemon, Plymouth Sloe Gin, Cherry Bitters
Sable – “Skynet Cocktail”
Svedka Vodka, Amaro Montenegro, crème de mure, lemon
The Drawing Room – “Absolut Tea Time”
Wild Tea, Plymouth Sloe, grapefruit, ginger, fresh sour, earl greay mist
Aviary – “Ginger”
Hahahahahahaha. Good luck.
Yes, I realize that may have been slightly unhelpful for the average person looking to go home and have one cocktail to celebrate. Like I learned back when I was just another Vodka Redbull chugging college kid though, “Go big or go home.” I asked the public this morning what their favorite vodka cocktail was, and here are a few of the responses. Maybe one of them will be of more use to you. Enjoy National Vodka Day; I know I will!
