The New York City Beerathon
I’ve competed in a decent number of obscure challenges like the Greatest Urban Stairclimb, the Urbanathlon, Warrior Dash and even a triathlon, but never have I seen an event as amazing, and intimidating, as the New York City Beerathon.
The Beerathon is for athletes of the liver. It’s for the brave, the strong, the weak, and the meek. Basically everyone and anyone. As long as you love beer, you have the opportunity to take part in this awesome festival of fun. Finishing is not mandatory, participating is.
The NYC Beerathon is the greatest day of your life.
The event is Nov. 19th, and it seems like a great use of a Saturday afternoon to me. In my prime I could have come close to completing this daunting task, but I make no promises for my former self. I’m not sure finishing a case of Coors Light in my dorm room years ago is an adequate comparison to the longevity needed for a beerathon. Each of the 26 bars will have a 12-ounce craft beer waiting for you, meaning that if you count beers in terms of ABV, you would most likely be drinking closer to 40 beers in order to finish the race. Supposedly only one man has ever finished, so if you’re up to it, take your shot at achieving glory. And I mean shot literally. A marathon is 26.2 miles, and I think you should rip a finish line shot to account for the extra 0.2 miles.
The event costs $65 and includes a beer at each bar plus extra swag. If you feel yourself losing steam at any point, just think of the fact that you’d be wasting part of that precious entrance fee. Unfortunately, I’m not able to make the trip over from Chicago to teach you how to swing, but if any of you readers accept the challenge, I’d love to hear about it!
