VIDEO: Beer – Economies of Scale vs Authenticity
The battle between craft and macro beer has been raging for decades, but at least it’s now a decent fight. Craft breweries still provide a minuscule portion of the beer market, but consumers are finally starting to demand better beer. The question has always been, how did we become so accepting of mediocre (I still love Bud Light) beers? It’s an interesting topic, and it actually centers around market efficiency.
Check out this talk by Scott Metzger, founder of Texas’ Freetail Brewing Co., discussing how we ended up where we are today and what is helping drive the turnaround. It’s long, and he isn’t the best speaker, but I have a feeling you could stand to kill some time today.
I don’t know about you, but I love “Ted Talks.” There are tons of people that have far more interesting ideas and perspectives than I do, and it’s enjoyable to occasionally open myself up to them. Metzger makes some great points about how far we’ve come and where we need to go. If nothing else, hopefully he convinced some people that the prices charged for craft beers aren’t as unreasonable as many suggest.
